There is something I want to tell you before we get into Private Label Rights, or PLR, digital products.
This is not an article written by somebody who discovered PLR yesterday and suddenly wants to tell you how to become rich online.
I have been on the other side of the table.
I have spent years looking for answers.
And I have spent money looking for those answers too.
Perhaps my experience will sound familiar to you.
My Journey Wasn’t Supposed to Go This Way
When the Corona virus pandemic arrived, my life changed in a way I could never have imagined.
I lost my high-paying job.
Like many people, I initially believed that it would be temporary. I thought things would settle down and I would find another opportunity.
But life does not always follow the plan we make for it.
I eventually decided to use the savings I had accumulated over the years and started a small retail store selling dry fruits.
It was not a huge business.
But it was mine.
I put my time, savings and hopes into it.
Unfortunately, things did not work out the way I had expected.
Eventually, I had no choice but to close the store.
And that left me with a much bigger problem than simply losing a business.
I had to find another source of income.
There was financial pressure.
There was debt.
There was uncertainty.
And, perhaps most difficult of all, there was the constant question running through my mind:
“What do I do now?”
I Started Looking Everywhere for an Answer
Like many people in that situation, I started looking at the internet.
And once you enter that world, you quickly discover something interesting.
There is no shortage of people willing to teach you how to make money online.
I attended webinar after webinar.
And when I say “many”, I really mean many. From Rs.9/- to Rs.99/- introductory webinars.
I must have attended 150 or more webinars over the years and simultaneously enrolling in the courses covering everything from Meta Ads and digital marketing to digital product creation and online selling.
I watched presentations.
I took notes.
I became excited about one idea and then another.
For a short while, I would think:
“Perhaps this is the thing that will finally work for me.”
Then another course would appear.
Another opportunity.
Another strategy.
Another promise of learning how to build an online income.
I invested in several of them.
But despite all that learning, I wasn’t getting the breakthrough I desperately needed.
Now, before anyone misunderstands me, let me make something very clear.
I am not saying those courses were bad.
Many of them contained useful information.
Some of the trainers were knowledgeable.
Some of the strategies were perfectly legitimate.
The problem may have been me.
Perhaps I could not absorb everything properly while dealing with the pressure I was under.
Perhaps financial stress affected my ability to concentrate.
Perhaps I was trying to learn too many things at the same time.
Or perhaps I simply needed a different route.
Whatever the reason, the result was the same.
I had consumed a tremendous amount of information, but I still had not built the income stream I was hoping for.
Then Something Went Right
Ironically, the thing that eventually started moving me in a different direction was not another course.
It was something I had wanted to do for many years.
Writing
I finally started taking my writing seriously.
And that eventually led to the birth of my blog:
failure2success.com
Today, I have been blogging for around five years.
It has not been a straight road.
There have been periods of enthusiasm and periods when life got in the way.
There have been articles that performed well and articles that hardly anybody read.
But there is something different about blogging.
When I write, I feel that I am building something that belongs to me.
An article I publish today can still be read months or years later.
A useful piece of information can reach somebody I have never met.
And perhaps most importantly, writing gives me an opportunity to share some of the lessons I have learned through my own journey.
That is why I am writing about PLR today.
Not because I believe PLR is a magic button.
By the way, did I forget to tell you the real purpose behind this write-up?
If you are someone looking to build an online Digital Products selling business and are searching for a way to start as early as possible, I want you to take a step back before you jump into an expensive course.
Read first.
Understand what this business actually involves.
And most importantly, ask yourself whether this is something you can genuinely do and sustain.
There is nothing wrong with investing in a good course. In fact, the right course, at the right time, can save you months or even years of trial and error.
But spending your hard-earned money first and discovering later that the business is not meant for you can be a painful lesson.
That is something I would genuinely like you to avoid.
Let Me Tell You the Uncomfortable Truth
Let me admit something that may sound a little harsh.
The world around us can be selfish.
Everyone is trying to build a better life, secure their future and make money. There is nothing wrong with that. We also have to learn to look after ourselves because, at the end of the day, nobody else can build our future for us.
But this is where we need to become careful.
Whenever money is involved, there will always be people who know how to present an opportunity in the most attractive way possible.
And this is particularly true in the online-business world.
You attend an introductory webinar, perhaps out of curiosity. The presentation begins, the success stories appear, the numbers start getting bigger, and before you realise it, you are imagining a completely different financial future.
First, you hear about earning lakhs.
Then you are told that crores are possible.
And technically, there is nothing impossible about building a business that eventually reaches those numbers.
But there is a very important part that is often left out.
It takes time.
It takes learning.
It takes consistency.
It takes experimentation.
And most importantly, it takes work.
You have to step outside your comfort zone and, in many cases, develop more than one skill and work through multiple streams before you begin to see meaningful results.
The mistake is not dreaming big.
The mistake is believing that the dream will happen immediately.
Digital Products are a Business, not a Shortcut.
This is one point I particularly want to make clear.
When you first hear about PLR and digital products, it can appear wonderfully simple.
Find a product.
Give it your branding.
Put it on a platform.
Sell it.
But there is much more happening behind the scenes.
Every business needs customers, and customers need to know that your product exists.
That brings us to advertising.
Today, one of the most widely discussed methods of online advertising is Meta Ads. Facebook and Instagram can put your product in front of thousands of people, but reaching those people isn’t free.
This is where many beginners get a surprise.
They initially think:
“I only need to learn the product skill, create something and start earning.”
Unfortunately, that is not the complete picture.
You may need money for advertising, testing different creative’s, understand your audience, improving your landing page, experimenting with offers and learning what actually converts.
In other words, you may have to spend money before your business starts making money.
That doesn’t mean the business doesn’t work.
It simply means we need to understand the business properly before putting our money into it.
And that is exactly why I believe a little awareness at the beginning can save us from a lot of disappointment later.
Can Everyone Do It?
Here comes another question that rarely gets enough attention.
Can everyone who joins a digital-products course become successful?
Obviously not.
And that isn’t because the course is necessarily bad or because the student isn’t capable.
We are simply different.
We have different abilities, different interests, different backgrounds, different levels of confidence and, importantly, different ways of learning.
Take language, for example.
Some digital skills require a reasonable command of English because the course material, tools, advertising platforms and communication may all be primarily in English.
If someone is more comfortable communicating in Hindi or another regional language, they may initially find certain aspects difficult.
But that doesn’t mean they cannot succeed.
If your target audience speaks your regional language, you can build your communication, content and even your digital products around that audience.
The language itself is not always the limitation.
Knowing whom you want to serve is.
A Small Real-Life Example
Let me share something that actually happened to me.
During a break one day, I was casually watching reels on my phone. Suddenly, a Marathi reel appeared.
I don’t know Marathi.
Normally, I would have simply moved on.
But something about the visuals caught my attention, so I continued watching.
Although I couldn’t understand the language, I could follow part of the story because the visuals were communicating something to me.
Now imagine the same situation if I actually knew Marathi.
The experience would have been completely different.
I would have understood the words, the emotions, the humour and perhaps even the finer details of the message.
That little incident made me think about something much bigger.
The right message delivered to the right audience can cross barriers.
And this is exactly how we need to think when building a digital-products business.
You don’t necessarily have to speak to everyone.
You need to understand who you are speaking to.
The Classroom Tells Us the Same Story
Think about a classroom with 50 students.
The teacher teaches everyone.
The syllabus is the same.
The examination is the same.
The opportunity to learn is broadly the same.
Yet the results are different.
A few students may achieve exceptional marks.
Some may score reasonably well.
Others may struggle.
And perhaps one or two may even fail.
Does that automatically mean the teacher failed?
Does it mean the students who scored less are incapable?
Not necessarily.
People have different strengths, different learning abilities and different interests.
The same principle applies to business.
Just because someone else has built a successful digital-products business doesn’t mean that exactly the same path will work for you.
You have to discover where you fit.
A Doctor gives us another simple Example
Consider a doctor.
A cardiac surgeon may be an excellent surgeon.
An orthopedic surgeon may also be an excellent surgeon.
But you wouldn’t expect a cardiac surgeon to perform an orthopedic operation simply because both are surgeons.
Both are highly skilled.
Both are professionals.
But their areas of expertise are different.
That is how I look at digital businesses too.
There are many opportunities.
There are many skills.
There are many courses.
There are many business models.
But you don’t have to master everything.
You have to discover the field in which you can perform well.
So, Why Am I Writing This?
This article is not here to tell you that PLR digital products are a magic formula for making money.
They are not.
Nor am I trying to discourage you from entering the digital-products business.
Quite the opposite.
I want you to understand it better.
I want you to know what you are getting into before you spend your money.
I want you to understand that there is an opportunity here, but there is also work involved.
I want you to know that you may have to learn about products, content, branding, marketing, advertising, customers and platforms.
And I want you to understand that success may not happen overnight.
Most importantly, I want you to give yourself a chance to decide whether this business model actually suits you.
Read this article first.
Understand the basics.
Look at what PLR really means, how digital products can be created and sold, what the different rights mean, how products can be transformed into something more valuable, and what you may realistically have to invest—not only in money, but also in time and effort.
Once you understand all of that, you can make a much more informed decision.
And if you eventually decide to take a course, you will be entering it with your eyes open rather than simply following the excitement of a webinar.
Because there is nothing wrong with dreaming about earning lakhs.
There is nothing wrong with believing that one day you could build something much bigger.
Dream big
But before you spend your money chasing the dream, make sure you understand the road that leads to it.
That is the real reason I wrote this article.
Not to sell you a dream, but to help you decide whether the dream is yours to pursue.
So, what exactly is this PLR?
PLR stands for Private Label Rights.
In simple terms, PLR allows you to purchase certain rights to an existing digital product and, depending on the license, modify, rebrand, publish or sell the resulting product.
PLR products can include:
- eBooks
- Reports
- Courses
- Checklists
- Templates
- Articles
- Graphics
- Videos
- Audio
- Software
- Worksheets
- Social media content
- Marketing materials and the list goes on
However, there is one important point that beginners should understand.
PLR does not mean “anything goes.”
Every product comes with its own license.
Some licenses allow substantial modification and resale. Others may allow personal use, resale or distribution but restrict the transfer of editable files or the rights themselves.
For example, ContentSparks allows buyers to customize its material and use finished versions with their audiences, clients or customers, while its license specifically restricts selling or sharing the editable source files or transferring the underlying PLR rights.
So never assume that because something says “PLR”, you can automatically do whatever you want with it.
Read the license
That one habit can save you considerable trouble later.
Why did PLR catch my Attention?
After spending years watching webinars and enrolling in courses, I began noticing something.
Many online business models eventually come down to the same basic activities:
Create something useful.
Put it in front of the right people.
Build trust.
Generate leads.
Make an offer.
That sounds simple.
But the first part, creating something useful, can take an enormous amount of time.
Suppose you want to create an eBook.
You need to research the subject.
Write the chapters.
Edit them.
Design the document.
Create a cover.
Prepare a sales page.
Create promotional material.
Make social media posts.
Create an email sequence.
Perhaps create a lead magnet as well.
For a beginner working alone, that can be overwhelming.
PLR can provide a starting point.
And that is how I think it should be viewed.
Not as the finished product, as the raw material.
The Real Advantage of PLR: It can save you Time
Imagine you want to create a small eBook about productivity.
You know the subject.
You have ideas, but you have never written an eBook before.
Instead of beginning with a completely blank page, you can find a PLR resource covering a related subject.
You study it.
You understand its structure.
You rewrite it.
You remove anything that doesn’t fit your audience.
You add your own examples.
You add your own stories.
You add your own recommendations.
You change the design.
You create your own title.
And, most importantly, you make the final product useful to your particular audience.
The result can be dramatically different from the original.
The PLR provided the starting framework.
You provided the personality.
PLR is Particularly Interesting for Bloggers
This is where I believe PLR has enormous potential.
A blogger is constantly looking for things to write about.
Suppose you find a PLR eBook containing 30 ideas about personal development.
You don’t have to publish the eBook.
Instead, you could use the ideas as research material for your blog.
One chapter could become a detailed article.
Another could become an Instagram carousel.
Another could become a YouTube video.
Another could become an email newsletter.
Another could become a downloadable checklist.
Suddenly one resource has become a content bank.
This is much more interesting than simply buying a PLR ebook and putting your name on the cover.
One PLR Product Can Become an Entire Content Campaign
Let’s take a practical example.
Suppose you purchase a PLR product about building confidence.
Instead of immediately selling it, imagine turning it into this:
Blog
7 Small Habits That Can Improve Your Confidence
A carousel:
7 Things Confident People Do Differently
Reel
“If you struggle with confidence, stop doing these three things.”
YouTube
A 10-minute video:
How to Build Confidence When Life Has Knocked You Down
Lead Magnet
The 7-Day Confidence Challenge
Email Series
Seven short emails, one lesson each day.
Digital Product
A personalized workbook.
Paid Bundle
Workbook + eBook + checklist + audio lessons.
Now you are no longer thinking:
“What can I sell?”
You are thinking:
“How can I turn one useful subject into something genuinely valuable for my audience?”
That is a completely different mindset.
PLR Can Also Help With Lead Generation
Not every digital product has to be sold.
Sometimes the smarter use is to give something away.
Suppose you have a website about personal development.
You could create a free:
“30-Day Personal Growth Workbook”
A visitor enters their email address to receive it.
Now you have a subscriber.
You can continue sending useful information.
You can share your articles.
You can recommend relevant products.
You can introduce your own paid products later.
This is where a PLR product can become a lead magnet rather than a product for direct sale.
And sometimes the free product can be more valuable to your business than the money you might have made by selling it for a few dollars.
PLR Can Be Useful for Social Media Creators too
You don’t have to own a blog to benefit from PLR.
A person running an Instagram page, Facebook page, LinkedIn profile or YouTube channel can use PLR as a source of ideas and raw material.
For example, a PLR resource about social media marketing might contain several different topics.
You could turn them into:
- Instagram carousels
- Short videos
- LinkedIn posts
- Facebook posts
- Infographics
- Quotes
- Checklists
- Newsletter topics
But again, don’t simply copy and paste.
Social media audiences respond to personality.
Add your experience.
Tell a story.
Give an example.
Explain what worked and what didn’t.
That is what makes the content yours.
PLR can Become a Digital Product Business
This is probably the area that attracts the most attention.
And yes, PLR can be used to create digital products.
You could create:
- eBooks
- Workbooks
- Checklists
- Templates
- Mini-courses
- Email courses
- Resource bundles
- Printable
- Membership resources
- Educational material and many more
Some PLR providers specifically offer products designed to be customised, taught, sold or incorporated into business offers. ContentSparks, for example, positions its material for coaches, consultants, service providers, educators and digital product creators.
Other marketplaces take a much broader approach.
IDPLR currently lists thousands of products across areas such as ebooks, videos, graphics, templates, audio and software, with different resale and private-label licenses.
PLR Database similarly offers a large marketplace covering areas including marketing, business, technology, templates, WordPress and other categories.
That variety is useful, but it also creates a problem.
Too much choice
Don’t buy PLR just because it is Cheap
This is one mistake I would strongly caution beginners against.
When you enter a PLR marketplace and see hundreds or thousands of products, it is very easy to start collecting.
You see an eBook for just 99.
Then another for 199.
Then a bundle for 499.
Then another one for 49.
Before you know it, you have accumulated dozens of digital products.
And you have done absolutely nothing with them.
I know this mindset because the online marketing world can encourage it.
We keep thinking:
“I’ll use this someday.”
Someday rarely comes.
Instead, ask yourself three questions before buying:
1. Who is going to use this?
If you cannot answer that, don’t buy it.
2. What problem will it solve?
If the answer is unclear, don’t buy it.
3. What am I going to create from it?
If you don’t have a plan, put your wallet away.
A $5 product that sits unused on your hard drive is not an investment.
It is a $5 expense.
The PLR Product Is Not Your Business
This is perhaps the most important lesson I have learned.
Suppose you buy a PLR ebook.
You change the cover.
You replace the author’s name with yours.
You upload it to a marketplace.
Then you wait.
Nothing happens.
You conclude:
“PLR doesn’t work.”
But perhaps PLR was never the problem.
The problem was that you had a product but no audience.
No traffic.
No positioning.
No email list.
No marketing.
No reason for somebody to choose your version instead of the hundreds of similar products available online.
The product is only one piece.
The business comes from everything around it.
How I Would Use PLR Today
If I were starting again with a limited budget, I would do things differently.
I wouldn’t purchase 100 products.
I would choose one subject.
Something I understand.
Something people are interested in.
Something connected to the audience I want to build.
Then I would find one good PLR resource.
I would study it.
Rewrite it.
Improve it.
Add my own examples.
Add stories.
Add exercises.
Change the structure where necessary.
Create a professional design.
Then I would create several pieces of free content around that same subject.
The free content would bring people to my website.
The website would offer a useful free resource.
That would help build my email list.
And only after building some relationship with the audience would I introduce the paid product.
That is much slower than the “make money tomorrow” promises we sometimes hear online.
But I believe it is much more realistic.
And Here Is Something I Wish Somebody Had Told Me Earlier
You don’t necessarily need another expensive course.
Sometimes what you need is a small project that you actually finish.
I spent years attending webinars and learning.
Perhaps you have done the same.
There is nothing wrong with learning.
But there comes a point when learning becomes another form of procrastination.
We keep preparing.
We keep researching.
We keep buying courses.
We keep waiting until we know everything.
Meanwhile, somebody else with half our knowledge starts something and learns by doing.
I have experienced this myself.
And I am not writing this from a position of having everything figured out.
Far from it.
I am still learning.
I am still experimenting.
I am still trying to find what works.
But after years of searching, I have realised something very important:
You don’t need to know everything before you begin.
You need to begin, learn, make mistakes, correct them and continue.
Some PLR Platforms worth Exploring
If you are interested in exploring this model, there are several types of PLR marketplaces worth looking at.
IDPLR
IDPLR is one of the older and broader PLR membership platforms. Its current catalogue includes eBooks, videos, graphics, templates, audio, software and other digital products. It also offers products with different combinations of Private Label Rights, Resale Rights and Master Resell Rights.
PLR Database
PLR Database operates more like a large marketplace, with thousands of products covering categories ranging from marketing and business to technology, templates, WordPress and other subjects.
ContentSparks
ContentSparks takes a more focused approach, particularly for coaches, consultants, educators and service providers. Its products are designed to be customised and used in courses, workshops, lead magnets, client resources and other business applications.
PLR Hustle
PLR Hustle offers digital assets under a license that includes Master Resell Rights for its paid assets, according to its current license terms. Its catalogue is aimed at people looking to rebrand, modify and resell digital products.
These are examples, not endorsements of every product they carry.
Always read the license attached to the individual product before using it commercially.
The Difference between PLR, RR and MRR
This is another area where beginners can become confused.
PLR — Private Label Rights
Generally gives you permission to modify and rebrand a product, subject to the specific license.
RR — Resell Rights
Generally allows you to resell the product, but the buyer’s rights may be restricted.
MRR — Master Resell Rights
Often allows you to resell the product together with certain resale rights.
But here is the important part:
There is no universal license that applies to every PLR product.
One seller’s PLR terms may be very different from another seller’s.
So don’t rely solely on the words “PLR”, “RR” or “MRR”.
Read the actual license.
That small amount of reading can prevent a very large headache later.
What about Using PLR for Blogging?
I would be particularly careful here.
Search engines value useful, original content.
Therefore, I would never recommend taking a PLR article, changing a few words and publishing it on your blog as if it were your own original work.
Instead, use PLR as research material or a starting framework.
Add:
- Your own experiences
- Your own opinions
- Your own examples
- Current information
- Original photographs
- Interviews
- Case studies
- Personal observations
- New research
- Your own conclusions
This is particularly important to me because I have spent years developing failure2success.com.
I don’t want a library of generic articles.
I want a website that has a personality.
And that personality should come from me.
PLR can provide information.
It cannot provide my life.
My Biggest Lesson from All Those Webinars
After attending perhaps 150-plus webinars, buying courses and trying different ideas, I don’t think my biggest mistake was spending money.
My biggest mistake was probably believing that the next course, next strategy or next tool would somehow remove the difficult part.
The difficult part is still there.
You have to work.
You have to publish.
You have to learn.
You have to promote.
You have to understand your audience.
You have to accept that some things won’t work.
And then you have to try again.
No PLR website can do that for you.
No AI tool can do that for you.
No expensive course can do that for you.
But these tools can make the journey less expensive, less time-consuming and perhaps a little less overwhelming.
That is where I see the real value.
If I Had to Start Again With Almost Nothing
I would keep it simple.
I would choose one audience.
One problem.
One useful PLR resource.
One website.
One social media channel.
One free lead magnet.
One email list.
And one small paid product.
Then I would work on those seven things until I understood what my audience actually wanted.
I would not spend the next six months buying courses.
I would spend those six months building something.
Perhaps it would fail.
Perhaps it would succeed.
But at least I would have learned from something I actually built.
And That Is Why I Am Sharing This With You
I don’t know where you are in your journey.
Perhaps you are already running a blog.
Perhaps you have an Instagram page but don’t know how to monetise it.
Perhaps you have purchased courses and haven’t yet made your first digital product.
Perhaps you have a hundred ideas and haven’t acted on any of them.
Or perhaps you are simply looking for a way to begin without spending a fortune.
I understand that feeling.
I’ve been there.
And I am still on the journey.
The difference today is that I no longer believe that I need to find the perfect opportunity.
I simply need to find something useful, learn how to use it properly and start.
PLR may not be the answer for everyone.
It wasn’t a magic solution for me.
But I believe it can be a useful piece of the puzzle for somebody who understands how to use it properly.
Don’t buy a PLR product because somebody told you that you can make money from it.
Buy it because you have a purpose for it.
Know what you are going to do with it before you purchase it.
And then make it better.
Make it yours.
Put your experience into it.
Give it a reason to exist.
From Failure to something Better
My journey from losing my job, trying to run a small store, closing that store, dealing with financial pressure and searching through countless webinars and courses has not been easy.
But perhaps there is another way of looking at it.
Maybe all those failed attempts weren’t completely wasted.
They taught me what I don’t want to do.
They taught me to be more careful with my money.
They taught me that information alone isn’t enough.
They taught me that there is a difference between learning about a business and actually building one.
And most importantly, they brought me back to something I genuinely enjoy.
Writing
Today, when I sit down to write an article, I don’t know exactly where it will take me.
Perhaps ten people will read it.
Perhaps ten thousand will.
Perhaps somebody somewhere will read one paragraph and find an idea that helps them take their next step.
For me, that is enough reason to continue.
And if you are standing at the beginning of your own journey, I hope you remember this:
You don’t have to rebuild your entire life in one day.
Start with one useful idea.
Turn it into something useful.
Put it in front of somebody who needs it.
Then do it again tomorrow.
That is how small things begin to grow.
And perhaps, one day, when you look back, you will realise that the thing you almost gave up on became the very thing that helped you move forward.
And that’s what failure to success really means to me.
Let me leave you with a simple thought.
Imagine you are stuck in traffic. Would you leave your vehicle in the middle of the road, give up and walk back home simply because the traffic isn’t moving?
Probably not, you wait.
You may become impatient. You may wonder how long it will take. You may even feel like turning around. But somewhere inside, you know that the road will eventually clear.
I believe life is much the same. When life hits back, we sometimes lose patience. We feel that nothing is moving and that the situation will never change. We become tired, frustrated and, sometimes, ready to give up. But all problems are not permanent. Sometimes, you don’t need to quit. You just need to pause. You need to breathe. You need to find your balance and give life a little more time.
Because just as the traffic eventually moves when the road clears, there will come a day when the road ahead of you becomes clear too. You just have to stay long enough to see it.
